Karen dilemma.

Karen gained weight, her boss told her she could no longer work as a receptionist. She was sent to work in the post room instead. “He told me the news during a team meeting – it wasn’t even in a private interview,” she says. “Everybody accepted it as a normal decision, including myself. I thought it was my own fault; I shouldn’t have gained the weight. She was supposed to wear the company’s clothes behind the reception desk. “At one point I reached size 18, but their clothes only went up to size 14. I asked if I could wear something else. I said I had clothes in the same style. But they made it clear it would be bad for the company’s image to have an overweight person in reception. Self love

I have to just say how excited I am!!! I am so excited because I now see lots of women love their bodies for who they are. Particularly those who are overweight, plus size, curvy, whatever you want to call it. I am also excited that these women     are taking this confidence and selflove and using it to combat our culture’s norms and ideas about perfection and showing others that you can do anything in life no matter your physical size, weight or skin color… just do you.

Plus size and healthy

You are in charge of your body and your health—no one else is. Your weight is one dimension of information that a medical expert might use to determine your overall health, but it’s not the only factor that defines whether or not your body is healthy. Many people, whether they’re plus-size, or slim, or somewhere in between, have health issues that they’re working on. Some are trying to lose weight, or trying to improve their blood pressure, or changing the levels of different nutrients, such as iron or even protein in their diet. On the other hand, some people live perfectly healthy lives, yet they still encounter major health crises like cancer. Others smoke, drink, eat greasy food and are able to maintain a “healthy” weight and avoid diseases or medical setbacks. Some people that might be referred to as “skinny” are actually very unhealthy, and some people that might be referred to as “plus-size” actually live incredibly healthy lifestyles. However, none of that, including other pe...

Some difficulties encountered when buying plus size clothes

1.  Harder to find bargains.  I imagine it's supply and demand s. Plus size shoppers don't have as many choices, so they can't really bring their business elsewhere even if prices are not ideal.  This is changing as more brands carry plus size.  I don't believe the higher price necessarily has to do with more material.  A lot of men's larger sizes don't cost more, but then again they also tend not to have plus size sections like women's clothing.  (What's up with that? Why do I have to shop in a special section?!) 2.  Less style options.  It's difficult to find trendy clothes in plus size, especially in brick and mortar stores.  If you get lucky, you find stores that carry the most popular, selected trends but it's nothing compared to what regular shoppers have.    3. Fit.  I find a lot of plus size clothes are either spandex material that don't provide structural shap...

Fashion Challenges faced by plus size women

There is an assumption in the clothing industry that chubby women are big in all ways: tall,broad-shouldered, busty, etc. A short heavyset woman will often find dresses ill-proportioned at the waist; a small boned woman will have shoulders sliding down her arms (and the neck cut so large her bra straps show); a woman with a broad chest but small breasts will find it almost impossible to buy a bra, and blouses will have excess fabric that sags unattractively over her breasts. More annoying than all that, however, is the preponderance of horizontal stripes in plus size clothing, Although every overweight woman on the face of the earth knows that vertical stripes lengthen and slim the body, and horizontal stripes make you look wider, striped clothing in plus sizes is overwhemingly horizontal. Even if heavyset women know what looks good on them, that doesn’t do any good if manufacturers don’t make it. And if a store or catalogue offers a few of its dresses in larger sizes, the...
